Monument Sign | Detail Sketching

After the long Holiday weekend, we were going through some old sketches and came across a fun exercise that we worked out for the Hopkins office. When we knew we would have a walk-able office location with visible storefront, we knew signage would play a role in the design.

The sketches below were developed to help illustrate the design intent and construction detailing to the contractor. It's always fun to shift scale and think about the different design elements within a project.

Kowalski's Markets | Grand Avenue Grand Reopening

We were able to join the festivities as Kowalski's Markets officially opened their renovated location on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, MN! Mayor Coleman even stopped by to assist with the ribbon cutting and to officially congratulate Kowalski's on their new renovation.

Wilkus Architects has helped Kowalski's Markets on multiple projects throughout the Twin Cities. The renovation of their St. Paul location will continue to be a staple in the neighborhood. By exposing original window openings and providing a voluminous addition the space is much brighter and welcoming.

Special thanks to EFH Co. and Robert Gorski Associates, Inc. for their great partnership throughout the project.

Construction Story | Abdallah Candies Apple Valley, MN

A group of architects and designers from Wilkus Architects took the time to visit the construction site for Abdallah Candies in Apple Valley, MN. While on site, the group learned more about a full size mock up of the masonry exterior finish, witnessed the interior floor slab being poured and discussed the pros and cons of pre-cast vs. cast-in-place concrete structural members.

In the images below, you can see the exterior of the retail space being prepped to receive the finish material. In addition, the interior spaces are in the process of pouring slabs and finishing the pre-cast wall panels. Information gained while in the field is an important part of an architect's job. It's here where you learn how materials transition at full scale and how connections are made.
