Since 1990, Minnesota based Wilkus Architects has been specializing in the design of restaurant, commercial, retail, municipal, manufacturing and residential spaces. With 24 years of experience, the firm has helped clients expand their businesses within all 50 states and across the world. Over the past year, the architectural economy across the United States rebounded enough to necessitate the addition of eight professional positions. Even after an internal remodeling project it soon became clear that relocation would be necessary to accommodate the growth of the firm.

With a desire to leave behind their current suburban office warehouse facility, firm owner Michael Wilkus, AIA sought after a pedestrian friendly and intimately scaled urban environment. The City of Hopkins, Minnesota provided the ideal opportunity for relocation with its historic charm and available development opportunities within the established business district.

Located at 15 9th Avenue North, the 1950s era building was once a grocery store, which then transitioned into a neighborhood pharmacy. For the last six years the site has been vacant and subject to the elements.

While a complete demolition of the existing structure may seem like the obvious and simple option, Wilkus Architects, P.A. chose a sustainable response for the space. Flexible design opportunities presented ideal conditions for the adaptation of this existing structure. By rehabilitating the existing structure, demolition waste is reduced, construction costs are lower and the time frame for completion is expedited.

Wilkus Architects consists of licensed architects and interior designers that are committed to providing innovative design solutions that encourages our urban environments and communities to evolve. Project completion and relocation is expected in early 2015. The firm is excited to help redesign the streetscape of downtown Hopkins and looks forward to providing a quality work environment for their staff of 28 professionals.
